SlaughterhouseSpace is excited to announce that we are dedicating the next year of programming to a celebration of women! For the entire year of exhibitions and events we will be presenting works and performances by and about women. "Ordinary Miracles&quot, an exhibition about babies and mothers, will open June 27th and be on view until September 5th 2010.

"Ordinary Miracles" takes a wide look at artists who have worked with birth or infants as a subject. By producing an exhibition about babies and motherhood in a former abattoir we have chosen to invigorate and enliven the space with images of life. But life is not easy. How does a new mother feel about bringing a child into a world where the quality of life, opportunities, and resources may be in critical flux? Can the planet continue to support the exponential growth of the human species? Why is the subject of population control the “elephant in the room” when we discuss the fate of the earth?

Drawn to intimate forms of expression, a number of artists have chosen historic materials of feminist art practice: quilts, felting, and assemblage abound. The use of media such as photography and video also incorporates the actions and performance of everyday life. These forms express personal and intimate subject matter are pushed to their formal boundaries to portray the experiences of childrearing in contemporary society. It is a personal and highly narrative project with a radically diverse range of voices to realize a gathering place for both a celebration and discussion of life.

"Ordinary Miracles" brings together an international and mulitgenerational group of women (and a few brothers in arms) who are picturing the difficult questions about our procreative drive.

We stand in awe of the power of the maternal instinct and the bond between a mother and child. As the human family walks together into this new millennium, we at SlaughterhouseSpace wish to jump with joy at being alive and spend a moment to thank our moms.

"Ordinary Miracles&quot has a strong community dimension and we've made a decision to allow the exhibitionto continue growing with performances, interviews, and other events throughout it's duration.
