Tammy Rae Carland (b. 1965) is a native of Portland, Maine who currently lives and works in Oakland, California. She received her MFA from UC Irvine, and also attended the Whitney Independent Studies Program. She is an Associate Professor at the California College of the Arts where she also Chairs the Photography Department. She teaches undergraduate photography and interdisciplinary critical theory, as well as teaching in the graduate MFA program. Carland’s work utilizes photography, experimental video and limited-edition artist publications to explore questions of memory, affect and objecthood. Her complex pieces assemble an emotive, if oblique archive that attempts to bridge the artist’s personal experience with the public domain. Her work has been screened and exhibited in galleries and museums internationally including New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Berlin and Sydney. Her most recent exhibition at the gallery, “An Archive of Feelings,” was reviewed in Artforum and The San Francisco Guardian. Carland’s photographic work has been published in the Prague-based Fotograf Magazine and she is currently editing the upcoming issue of Capricious Magazine.
